History of Loyola Rugby
How it all Began

With a core of dedicated ruggers, the tradition of Loyola Rugby is born.

Loyola rugby was founded in the spring of 1993 by myself and Bart Calvanese. We had a small core of guys who had played in high school. Myself, Rob George, and Lou Vandover all played together for the St. Louis Druids. Mike Lay played for Regis in Denver and Bart played in boarding school in England. Other than that we had a bunch of guys determined to learn but no coach to teach them.

We soon found Anne Grauer's husband, Peter, who was an old rugby player from England. Coach Grauer's support helped shape the team we are today.

We scheduled our first game at the end of that spring semester against the College of Chiropractors. We were crushed on the field but victorious at the after party. Our first Carfu game followed the next semester against UIC with the same result.
